Winemaking
Winemaking
Grown in the Adelaide Hills on our shallow, rocky soil made up of mica shist, granite and clay loam.
This Sangio was picked in mid-April, then fermented on skins for 3 weeks. Fermentation was in small, open fermenters and regular hand-plunging was employed to extract the colour, flavour and tannins from the skins.
The ferment was then softly basket pressed directly to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation and maturation on full lees in young, single-use French oak barrels for 10 months.
The wine was then blended into tank and sent direct to bottle.
The result is a fresh and lively Sangiovese that is soft, complex and extremely drinkable while young, yet will reward some ageing.

* 95 pts - Tony Love - Sangiovese – Tuscany’s great hero variety – has settled well into SA, here from the highly regarded Shining Rock Vineyard in the Nairne district. Awarded trophies in the past two years at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show, this glitters out of the glass with enticing fruit cake notes and wild, crushed crimson berry aromas, followed by an effusive ripeness in the tasting that’s akin to an Amarone-style character, filling the mouth with a pleasingly rich wave of roasted fruit and garden herbal flavours. Boom. Best with intense braised tomato and meat ragu.
* 95 pts - Cassandra Charlick
* 94 pts - Lisa Cardelli - A lifted nose with glossy cranberries, red cherries, raspberries, red plums and blue violets scent. On the palate, this Sangiovese shows sweet vanilla and preserved red berries. So velvety and textural with expansive tannins. Generosity and abundance aplenty.
*94 pts - Matt Dunne - Dynamic duo Dan Berrigan & Wendi Ticao are making waves in the Adelaide Hills and Mount Benson, making thought-provoking wines of individual character and expression. This 2022 Sangiovese is from a 20 year-old, 15ha vineyard planted by Brian Croser in the Hills. There is an abundance of bright red fruit goodness to kick off the aromas here - sour cherry, fresh cranberry, complimented with a seasoning of basil and tomato leaf around the edges. There is bucket loads of energy and freshness on the palate which is tightly wound around that core of red cherry fruit, fresh garden herbs with a long, lingering finish driven by acidity & beautifully woven tannins. Drinking this alongside a weeknight favourite - Tuscan sausage and tomato pasta with fresh basil & parmesan. The framework of the wine cuts through the texture of sausage & the dried herb elements hold hands to lift up the wine. Yum!
